Sons and Daughters of Italy
This day celebrates the heritage of the Italians who were among the first to populate the town of Black Diamond. When coal was king in Black Diamond immigrants from Italy provided much of the muscle power that operated the coal mines.
The work was hard and dangerous and those who could went on to other enterprises. The last mine near Black Diamond closed in 1975, but many descendants of the Italian coal miners still live in the community.
The program is conducted in partnership with the Sons and Daughters of Italy of Black Diamond.
